Griffey again?

Jim Caple suggests that Ken Griffey Jr. may be able to resurrect his career by returning to Seattle after four feckless injury-ridden years in Cincinnati. He has some reasonable rationale for this and prerequisites for a deal. After all,

IMO, Caple is nuts.

While the Mariner faithful may not harbor ill feelings toward the guy anymore, there's still enough primadonna memories to make many wince. Also, the M's don't need a gimpy DH to replace another gimpy DH.

I don't think so.

My comment provider appears to be down. Maybe they ran out of disk space again. So, for the time being, no comments on this blog.

I have an old 3.5GB IDE drive somewhere. Maybe I should send it to them.

Mugged!

No, I wasn't on the south side. It wasn't violence. It's the weather.

Being from the Pacific Northwest, I'm just a heat and humidity wimp, I guess.

We had dew points in the 70s today, and the WGN weather guy says that this is equivalent to a tropical rain forest. No wonder it feels like you can cut the air with a knife! It's weird to hang up a bath towel, and it's still damp the next day.

I know, I know, it's worse elsewhere, but I consider myself "mugged".

Pray for the Supreme Court?

Pat Robertson wants people to pray that three justices (liberal or swing votes) will retire, so conservative justices can be appointed in their place.

Robertson complains, "...five unelected men and women who serve for life can change the moral fabric of our nation and take away the protections which our elected legislators have wisely put in place." (I'm not going to link to his letter. If you want to read it, you'll have to find it for yourself.)

However, his solution is to have five (or more) still-unelected men and women who would take away the protections which our elected legislators, and the courts, have wisely put in place, and replace them with decisions more to Robertson's liking.

This because the Supreme Court has decided that homosexuals are people too.

2003 All-Star Game

It was fun watching this last night, especially since it was right here in Chicago. (No, I didn't go.) I particularly liked the result, as I'm mostly an AL fan. I thought Scioscia did a better job of managing for the win than did Baker.

Let's see, how did my Mariners do? On the offensive side, Ichiro did pretty well, scoring the first AL run, but Boone and Edgar didn't do much. Moyer pitched a nice inning, but Hasegawa seemed to be overthrowing, giving up four runs in two-thirds of an inning, for an ERA of 54.00 for the game. Ugh.

Given the caliber of pitching in this game, I figured the 5-1 lead the NL had put together would be plenty. So did Baker, apparently, swapping the entire defense. But the AL fought back, capped off by Blalock's dinger.

I think having the ASG determine the home field advantage for the World Series is a crock. I think the team with the best record should hold the advantage throughout the playoffs. But either of these is better than alternating the advantage between NL and AL as they were doing before.

Sightseeing in Chicago

We had some friends visiting right after the 4th of July.

We went to the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette. It is quite a gorgeous building, and worth a visit, even if it's only a short one. You can spend more time there if you're interested in looking into the Baha'i faith.

We also took the touristy hop up the Hancock Building. The skydeck at Sears Tower is higher, but the Hancock has better views.

We also took an architectural tour on one of the boats that ply the Chicago River. It was an interesting vantage point for viewing the Hancock Building, Sears Tower, Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, plus some of the older converted warehouse space right on the river.

Pirates of the Caribbean

A fun flick. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush are great as Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. The moonlight effect is very cool. The bit with the medallion could be seen coming from a mile off, though.

It was funny to see the little vignettes from the ride.
